A Foley catheter is a sterile, thin tube that is inserted into the bladder to facilitate the drainage of urine. An indwelling catheter is also referred to as such due to its ability to remain in the bladder for an extended period. The catheter is secured in place by a balloon at the end, which is filled with sterile water to prevent it from being removed from the bladder. The catheter tube drains urine into a bag, which is emptied when it is full. Catheterization is the term used to describe the process of inserting a catheter.
