OZONE AS A DISINFECTANT AGENT

The oxidizing effect of ozone has enabled its use as a bactericide, fungicide, and virus inactivating agent since its discovery. Originally, it was employed as a disinfectant for fresh water in France since 1906 and in Germany since 1972. The selection of ozone is predicated on its superior efficacy against a broader range of microorganisms in comparison to other disinfectants. Virus inactivation has been the subject of less research than that of bacteria. Nevertheless, it is well-established that it occurs rapidly following ozonation, despite the fact that the gas concentration must be greater than that required for bacterial inactivation. Ozone’s mechanism of action on viruses is not to destroy them, as it does with bacteria, but to inactivate them. The effect of ozone is the oxidation and subsequent inactivation of the specific viral receptors that are used to establish a bond with the cell to be invaded. This would obstruct the virus’s multiplication mechanism during its initial phase, which is the invasion of the cell.
