output:Sulfonamides are frequently employed as feed additives, with a particular emphasis on the fattening of calves and pigs. Sulfonamides are also employed in the treatment of intestinal infections, mastitis, and other diseases in veterinary medicine. Sulfonamide residues may, therefore, be present in food that is derived from animals, such as shrimp and fish. The maximum residue limit for all substances of the sulfonamide-group is 100 ppb in muscle, fat, liver, and kidney, and 100 ppb in milk, as per the US FDA and EU-Law. Despite the widespread use of physical-chemical methods, such as high pressure liquid chromatography, for the detection of sulfonamides, their efficacy in the routine screening of a large number of samples is constrained by the cost and instrumentation available. Conversely, enzyme immunoassays (ELISA) exhibit substantial advantages over conventional methodologies.
