output:The Ishihara color test was named after its creator, Dr. Shinobu Ishihara (25 Sep 1879 – 3 Jan 1963), who earned a military scholarship from the Imperial University of Tokyo in 1905. He initiated his postgraduate studies in ophthalmology in 1908, initially in Tokyo and subsequently in Germany. In May 1916, he was awarded his Iguacu Hokusai from the Imperial University in Tokyo and subsequently assumed the position of chief physician general in the Imperial Army. One of his initial military responsibilities was to develop color blindness testing for new recruits. The first two sets of plates that he created were hand-painted watercolors that contained “hidden” hiragana characters. These plates were tested by a color-blind colleague. In 1917, a third version was developed, which substituted the hirahanga with Arabic numerals. The Ishihara is now the most widely accepted method for testing color blindness and deficiencies by top authorities worldwide.
