The NIRSIT system is the first fNIRS system to offer high temporal resolution (125 ms / 8 Hz) and millimeter-level spatial resolution. The system defied the conventional belief that fNIRS imaging is incapable of achieving spatial resolutions that are comparable to those of the more expensive and stationary fMRI and PET systems. NIRSIT is the result of the integration of three core/pioneering technologies: 1) dense packing of laser and photo diodes, 2) code-division multiple access (CDMA) and time division multiple access (TDMA) modulation for high temporal resolution, and 3) monolithic IC implementation for high SNR.

The initial commercial fNIRS system to incorporate real-time Diffuse Optical Tomography (DOT) yielded 204 channels with a spatial resolution of 4mm x 4mm.
