Knee osteoarthritis is a chondropathy (a disease of the cartilage) that results in the gradual disappearance of the knee. In certain instances, it is linked to an anomaly in the orientation of the axes of the femur and tibia. Pain and instability in the knee are the primary symptoms.

In the event that medical treatment is unsuccessful, an osteotomy (from the Greek words “oste,” meaning “bone,” and “tomê,” meaning “section”) can be performed to facilitate near-normal activity while preserving the joint. This will be considered before the installation of a prosthetic knee is considered. In an effort to rectify the axis defect and more effectively distribute the body’s weight across the knee, the femur and/or tibia are cut. This procedure has the potential to alleviate or eliminate the pain.

The procedure is of interest due to its conservative nature (it does not affect the articular surfaces) and its potential to yield long-term results. Valgus tibial osteotomy (VTO) on the genu varum and femoral varus osteotomy (FVO) on the genu valgum are the most frequently performed osteotomies.input:
