The GFR of dogs and cats can be more accurately represented by SDMA, which is entirely dependent on kidney metabolism. This is an earlier indicator of kidney function than creatinine.
Chronic kidney disease is prevalent in cats of all ages, with a prevalence of approximately 50%. The rate of chronic kidney disease in cats over the age of 15 is as high as 80.9%. It is imperative to conduct early screening for CKD, as at least one-third of cats and one-tenth of dogs will develop the condition during their lifetimes.

SDMA (symmetric dimethylarginine) is entirely dependent on kidney metabolism, which can more accurately reflect the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of dogs and cats. SDMA is an earlier indicator of kidney function than creatinine, and it can be increased when kidney function is lost by 25%.
