Muscle atrophy may result from disuse and lack of exercise due to aging, unfamiliarity with exercise, orthopedic disease, and diseases, such as respiratory/cardiovascular disorders. Individuals who are exercise-deficient are unable to engage in physical activity, which can result in a decline in muscle strength, the progression of the primary disease to cause pain, and distress during exercise, as well as a decrease in their motivation to exercise.
